Seasons Change- Matt Way
For a long time the beginning of September has been one of my favourite moments in the year. It possesses a sort of transitional energy, standing as a bridge between the seasons. At once it looks back to relish and celebrate everything that has gone, whilst also brimming with promise for so much yet to unfold. It is the time of year that we harvest summer fields to prepare for the winter ahead. It is the moment when children return to their classrooms in brand new uniform they will have soon outgrown. It is a time of shift, and of transformation, and for many cultures, for most of history, it is a moment in September that has marked the end of one year and the beginning of the next.
To me, this September feels especially new years-y as it marks the anniversary of my arrival here at St Luke’s. We have travelled together for one year now, and as we head into the next I want us to seize upon this moment of seasons change to think together about who we are, and who we want to be.
This Sunday we’re going to embark upon a new series that will carry us all the way to Christ the King Sunday and the beginning of Advent. In it we will take time to consider the things that mark us out as a church, what it means for us to share in this communal life together, and what kind of institution we want St Luke’s to be. We will think about how we (and others) see St Luke’s, and how we be St Luke’s.
I am writing to you today as part of our new look weekly newsletter, and you will see that at the top it bears our newly commissioned logo. I do hope you like the way that it looks, but as with any good symbol the way it looks is only the beginning. This weekend as we begin our new series we will open up scripture, and cast our eyes over this new symbol of St Luke’s as we start to ask ‘what do you see?’
Whether you’ve been here for years or are newer than I, I hope you can join us then for Seeing St Luke’s part 1: It All Hangs Together.
