Not in a Homegroup? – Read On!- Sue Harris

We currently have 7 established homegroups at St Luke’s, with one more just started this September, so why not consider joining one? They meet fortnightly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, some in the daytime and some in the evening so you should be able to find one that suits you. In a relatively large church a homegroup can provide a smaller, more intimate group where you can get to know people better.

Here are some questions and concerns people have commonly raised.

What typically happens at a homegroup meeting?

Most groups have a time of chat over refreshments, opportunity to further explore the Bible (this is usually based on the sermon series) and to pray together for each other, the church and wider world issues

I wouldn’t be able to get to all the meetings, does that matter?

No, this isn’t a problem the group will be there for you when you’re able to go and most groups have ways of keeping in touch between meetings for updates or prayer requests

Do you have to pray out loud in the group?

Absolutely not, whatever you feel comfortable with.

Will people expect me to have an extensive knowledge of the Bible?

No, no knowledge is required, the homegroup should be a safe space to explore the Bible more, ask questions and express doubts.

How long do the meetings last?

They vary, but usually between one and a half and two hours.

Where do they meet?

Usually in someone’s home, which might not be in the parish, and one meets in the church centre

How big are the groups?

They vary greatly in size according to the space available in the host’s room but no bigger than around a dozen.

We have children so it’s a bit difficult to attend a group.

This can be difficult but consider whether you could offer to host a group or ask if there is anyone at church willing to babysit for you.

What happens if I don’t feel the group I’m in is right for me?

No worries, just have a word with Sue and she’ll look for a group that is more suitable or you may just decide that homegroups aren’t for you – joining a group needn’t be a lifelong commitment!

How do I go about joining a group?

Just have a word with Sue Harris or Matt Way and see what’s available.
